PUBG’s Update 42.3 went live on PC August 11, with maintenance running from midnight to 8:30 AM UTC the next day, and it introduces what Krafton is calling Meta Rotation: a plan to cycle different weapon classes into the spotlight roughly every four months instead of letting one gun family dominate indefinitely. Light machine guns are the first class through the door, and the RPD is the first new LMG added to the game in close to two years. Console players got the same update on August 20.
What actually changed on LMGs
The headline numbers are a roughly 25 percent cut to reload times across the LMG class and a 30 percent reduction in maximum horizontal recoil. Krafton also softened the vertical recoil spike that used to hit right at the start of sustained fire, which was one of the main reasons LMGs felt clumsy to control in the opening half-second of a burst. None of this makes LMGs laser beams. It makes them usable in the window where a fight is actually decided, instead of just being heavy suppression tools for the back half of a magazine.
The RPD itself fires 7.62mm rounds at 43 damage per shot and 750 rounds per minute, with a default 50-round magazine that extends to 110. Muzzle velocity sits at 735 meters per second, and it spawns as a world item on all maps rather than being locked to airdrops or a single map, which puts it in direct competition with the M249 for anyone who wants sustained fire without hunting a supply drop.

Krafton framed Meta Rotation as a long-term structural decision rather than a one-off balance patch, describing it as an approach that moves away from letting certain weapons dominate the meta for extended periods. If that holds, the next scheduled spotlight class would land roughly four months out, which points toward a rotation model closer to a seasonal battle pass than a traditional patch cycle.
Everything else in the update
August also brought the eighth Store Update of the year, including a Survivor Pass, new M79 skins, and a collaboration set tied to streamer XIAOHAI. A personalized shop with steep discounts reopened alongside it. On the less glamorous side, Krafton adjusted Map Selection in North America, South America, Europe, Russia, and console regions, and fixed lens effect bugs on the Hybrid Scope and P90 Scope that had been causing visual glitches when aiming down sights.
The LMG rework is the part that actually changes how matches play out. PUBG’s meta has leaned hard on assault rifles and marksman rifles for most of the game’s life, with LMGs mostly serving as a niche pick for players willing to eat the mobility and control tradeoffs. Cutting reload time by a quarter and recoil by nearly a third is a big enough swing that squads holding a compound with an RPD or M249 now have a real reason to hold that position through a fight instead of switching to something lighter the moment the magazine runs dry.
