Grenades in CS2 no longer clip through walls, ceilings and other level geometry the way they used to. If your smoke or molly lineup relied on the nade phasing through a lip of concrete or a stair railing for a split second before landing, that lineup is dead. This is not a nerf to grenades in general, it is a fix to a specific bug, but that bug was load bearing for a huge chunk of the lineups the community had been passing around since CS2 launched.
What actually changed
Valve’s recent patches, including the run of updates through August 2026, did not touch grenade damage, smoke duration or the economy. What they did touch is collision. Grenades that used to sail through a doorframe corner or graze a banister and keep going now stop dead against that geometry, the same way a bullet would. Combine that with the movement pass that smoothed crouching mid-air and made player height consistent on slopes, and you get a second-order effect: any lineup thrown from a crouched position on a ramp lands differently than it did before.
Practically, this hits three categories of throw:
- Smokes bounced off a specific corner of a window frame to skip past an obstruction.
- Mollies lobbed through a gap that only worked because the grenade briefly ignored the mesh.
- Flashes popped by grazing a ceiling beam at an angle no player would naturally throw at.
If your lineup falls into any of those buckets, it is worth re-throwing in an empty server before you trust it in a match.
Lineups that relied on the bug stopped working, and the number of “dead” lineups floating around community sites right now is larger than most players expect.
How to rebuild your set without wasting a week
You do not need to relearn every lineup on every map. Most of your throws were always geometry-clean, arcing over a wall or bouncing once off a flat surface, and those still work exactly as before. The fix is targeted:
- Go into an empty server on your two or three most-played maps and re-throw your full utility set against the wall, not against a bot lobby where you are distracted.
- Flag anything that used to graze a corner, a railing, or a thin prop. Those are the suspects.
- Re-source lineups from sites that have been updated since the August patches specifically, not just recently uploaded. Some creators re-record video without re-testing the actual physics.
- Test from both stances, standing and crouched, since the slope and crouch-height changes affect release point on ramps like Mirage’s mid or Nuke’s ramp room.
The maps to check first
Cache, Mirage and Nuke get flagged most often in patch discussion threads because of how many lineups depend on tight geometry: window frames, boost spots and ramp throws. If you play a lot of Ancient or Anubis, your set is probably more intact since those maps have fewer of the tight-corner throws that exploited the old collision behavior.
The economy point people keep missing
Separate from grenades, there is a genuine economy shift worth knowing: T-side now gets a $50 team award for every CT eliminated in a round, on top of the usual kill reward. It is small per kill, but across a full-buy round where your team trades four or five kills, that adds up to a meaningfully faster forced-buy recovery than it used to. It does not change how you should play a round, but it does mean you can be slightly more aggressive about re-buying armor after a loss than the old math suggested.
None of this is a balance patch in the way a weapon nerf would be. It is Valve fixing a physics bug that happened to prop up a lot of lineups, plus a modest economic nudge. Treat your utility set as due for an audit, not a rebuild from zero.
